The Giver Activity #1: Utopias & Dystopias
Internet-Enhanced Lesson Overview:
Using the following activities, students will learn about utopias and dystopias in preparation for reading Lois Lowry's The Giver. Each activity will set expectations and build background for students to read, recognize, and analyze a dystopian society.
First, students will learn about utopias and dystopias by viewing a Shmoop video and submitting a GIST statement to an open TodaysMeet room. Next, students will create their own utopia or dystopia and write a blog entry using Edublogs. Finally, students will create a "pamphlet" or advertisement persuading tourists to visit their utopia using Prezi.

- View Shmoop video on utopias and dystopias
- Create a GIST statement and post it to TodaysMeet room
- Brainstorm in TodaysMeet room about utopias and dystopias in pop culture
- Discuss GIST statements, brainstorm entries, and key differences between utopias and dystopias
GIST Statement - Student's GIST statement should be a 20-word summary statement about utopias and dystopias.
