Activity 1: A Long Walk to Water Virtual Gallery Walk
Introduction: In this lesson, students will set expectations and build prior knowledge for Linda Sue Park's A Long Walk to Water. First, students will preview each source and respond initially as a class. Then, students will evaluate each source in depth by reflecting, observing, and questioning. The purpose of this activity is to help students experience Salva's story in a more authentic and genuine manner by asking them examine primary sources relating to the novel's setting and conflict.

- Google Slides
- Primary Source Tutorial video
Learning Activities:
Students will:
- Access Google Classroom using Google Chromebooks
- Access Google Classroom assignment: A Long Walk to Water Primary Source Activity
- View short YouTube video about primary sources
- Make a copy of A Long Walk to Water Primary Source Presentation {embedded below}
- Share Google Slides presentation with instructor
- Create a slide after each primary source
- Insert a three-column table and label the columns respectively: Reflect, Observe, Question {Instructional Video}
- Evaluate each source as a class by discussing initial thoughts/reactions
- Evaluate each source individually by responding to the following:
- Reflect: What do you notice first? Find something small but interesting. What do you notice that you didn't expect? What do you notice that you can't explain? What do you notice that you didn't earlier?
- Observe: Where do you think this came from? Why do you think somebody made this? What do you think was happening when this was made? Who do you think was the audience for this item? Why do you think this item is so important? What can you learn from examining this?
- Question: What do you wonder about - who? what? when? where? why? how?
- Submit Google Slides presentation to Google Classroom assignment link.

Using Google Lit Trips, students can access setting around the globe and learn valuable background information through embedded media (i.e. links and videos). Students will access this Google Lit Trip and follow Salva and Nya's journey to find water and home.

- Title new document as "A Long Walk to Water Google Lit Trip Journal"
- Share new document with instructor
- View A Long Walk to Water Google Lit Trip using headphones
- Respond to all questions in Google Lit Trip in Google Doc journal and explore at least one link per location
