Game-Based Learning Lesson Plan
Topic: Introduction to Greek Mythology Unit
Introduction: In this lesson, students will use various games to begin a unit on Greek mythology. First, students will set expectations by discussing how decisions positively and negatively affect people and fictional characters. Then, students will play Quandary to practice making ethical decisions from a leadership position. Next, students will be introduced to three myths - Cassandra, Croesus, and Narcissus - using Tiny Tap, an interactive close reading game. Following the Tiny Tap game, students will read the "Echo and Narcissus" myth. Finally, students will compete and demonstrate their knowledge/comprehension of the myth using Quizizz.
Content Area and Grade: English 7 Honors (Two 45 min. classes)
Objectives:
Students will:
- Discuss the role of decision making in Greek mythology.
- Practice making ethical decisions while playing Quandary.
- Set expectations using an interactive matching game, Tiny Tap.
- Read "Echo and Narcissus" myth.
- Compete and demonstrate comprehension of myth with Quizizz.
Materials:
- Google Chromebooks & Internet (access to Google Classroom)
- Whiteboard & projector
- "Echo and Narcissus" myth (student copies)
- Quandary
- Tiny Tap
- Quizizz
Learning Activities:
Day 1
Students will:
- Access Google Classroom using Google Chromebooks
- Discuss, as a class, the importance of making good decisions and how decisions affect us
- Share instances of decisions, good and/or bad, that affected their lives
- Access Quandary game using short link in Google Classroom assignment
- Practice making ethical decisions by playing Quandary
Day 2
Students will:
- Access Google Classroom using Google Chromebooks
- Access Tiny Tap interactive matching game using short link in Google Classroom assignment
- Set expectations and build background knowledge for Cassandra, Croesus, and Narcissus by playing Tiny Tap
- Read "Echo and Narcissus" myth as a class
- Discuss Narcissus's decisions and key events
- Compete and demonstrate knowledge through Quizizz comprehension quiz game
